SIR Alex Ferguson insists Manchester United can repeat their treble success of 1999.
The Old Trafford boss believes his side’s achievements last year are evidence they
can sweep the board again this season.
United won the Premier League title last term,
as well as reaching the semi finals
of the Champions League and FA Cup final, despite having their squad decimated by
injury in the latter stages of the campaign.
With a stronger squad this year – and a bit of luck – Ferguson believes another
treble could be on the cards.
“Last season if we'd had a stronger squad we could and would have done it then,”
he said. “But players like Gary Neville, Ferdinand, Vidic, Silvestre all got injured
at a bad time.
“We didn't have the central defensive pairings to go into the Champions League semi-final
second leg against AC Milan, we didn't have the experience.
"We were a bit unlucky then but we are stronger this year.
“In 1999 we didn't get any - only Henning Berg missed the Final through injury -
and you have to have that luck."
United kept their three-pronged assault going with a 3-1 win against Tottenham to
book their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Fergie added: "If we get to the semi final of the European Cup and FA Cup and are
still involved in the League we must have some sort of a chance.
“If we were to do it, then it would be some achievement and it is there for us to
do this time."
