Manager Alex Ferguson was happy with a draw in Lyon after Carlos Tevez’s 87th-minute equaliser.

United had to rely on the strike by sub Tevez to nick the advantage in this tie back from the French side. He tucked away a loose ball from three yards.

Lyon had taken a 54th-minute lead with a 20-yard drive from Karim Benzema.

Ferguson added: “I thought we were in control of the game when they scored.

“That was a setback and I had to change the team around by bringing on Tevez, Nani and Michael Carrick.

“Tevez and Nani did very well and improved our chances. There was an urgency about us and we showed our determination to get back in the game.

“We are delighted to gain a draw. But when it gets that late, you are never sure you are going to score a goal.

“This has given us a good opportunity to qualify for the quarter-finals.

“The players showed here what great character they have. Now we have to finish off the job at Old Trafford.”

Lyon coach Alain Perrin said: “I felt 1-0 was a good score but 1-1 is a different story. We let ourselves down.”
