ALEX FERGUSON launched a scathing attack on referee Martin Atkinson as Manchester United crashed out of the FA Cup to Portsmouth.

The United chief blasted the official for failing to protect his players as the Red Devils' slumped to a 1-0 home defeat in the sixth round clash at Old Trafford.

The Scot accused Atkinson of failing to award a penalty to the hosts when Sylvain Distin barged Cristiano Ronaldo inside the box in the first half.

Fergie fumed: "It's absolutely ridiculous. I cannot explain it.

"Managers get sacked because of things like that.

"The referee today was unbelievable. After five minutes, there had been three fouls - but he didn't give any cards.

"Then I do not get the penalty. It's very disappointing.

"Distin didn't try to take the ball. And when this happens it's difficult to play football. It's a joke.

"This is the best league in the world. But I'm scared sometimes because some players do unbelievable fouls, and the referee protects the defender - not the skilled players.

I'm thinking a lot about changing my game, because this happens.

"They don't give penalties, don't give yellows, don't give reds - it's difficult to play like that.

"I agree with Arsene Wenger - players need to be protected. But referees in this country simply aren't as good as in the rest of Europe.

Sulley Muntari's late spot-kick put Pompey through after United's substitute keeper Tomasz Kuszczak was sent off for tripping Milan Baros.

Ferguson had no complaints over that penalty decision.

But he believes Atkinson's performance shows refs should face tougher guidelines.

Fergie said: "He's not doing his job properly and he needs to be assessed.

"I'm assessed as a manager, players are assessed, referees should be assessed properly by the right people.

"That performance should not be accepted by our game."
