Sir Alex Ferguson conceded Manchester United's 3-3 draw with Chelsea was ultimately two points dropped despite the stirring nature of their comeback from three goals down.

Chelsea were in full control when Jonny Evans' first-half own goal was followed by efforts from Juan Mata and David Luiz, via a large deflection off Rio Ferdinand, shortly after the break.

But United were handed a lifeline by referee Howard Webb as he awarded a pair of penalties, which Rooney converted before substitute Javier Hernandez headed in a late equaliser.

Chelsea boss Andre-Villas Boas accused Webb of making some "strange decisions" but Ferguson said his side could have had four spot-kicks.

The Scot said: "We had two penalties in the second half which were justified. I think we could have had four penalties.

"It's two points dropped to be honest with you. We played ever so well apart from the period directly after half-time when we lost two goals. I thought we were by far the better team."

He also felt Blues debutant Gary Cahill should have been sent off for hauling down Danny Welbeck after 10 minutes.

"It's a sending off. I don't blame Howard Webb, I blame the assistant. I can't understand that. That linesman, who has given two penalties against us at Old Trafford in the past two years from 45 yards away - but he can't see that?

"There's a pull on Ashley Young right in front of him but he doesn't give it.

"I don't know where they get them from? His jersey is pulled and you have to make the decision 'is he diving?' Well if he's pulling the shirt he's not diving."

Despite his grievances Ferguson reflected on a memorable recovery, quick to praise his players following what was a remarkable contest.

He said: "A massive effort from our players and for the neutral watching the game from us being three-nil down to three each it would have been fantastic.

"I was pleased with my players."
