Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson feels Arsene Wenger let himself down when he labelled Darren Fletcher "anti-football" earlier in the season.

Fletcher was the subject of criticism from the Gunners boss two months ago following Arsenal's 2-1 defeat when the two sides last met. The French tactician said some of the Scotsman's challenges during the crunch match were "anti-football".

But the Red Devils boss has defended his star midfielder and added more fuel to an already rampant fire ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash by saying he was disappointed with the Frenchman's earlier rant.

"That is where Arsene let himself down," said Ferguson.

"What he said was disappointing and actually, I don't think he believes it for a minute.

"Everyone knows that Darren Fletcher is not a dirty player or a physical player. He is not built that way.

"But he can win the ball and his timing and energy to get to it is fantastic. You can't call that a fault."

Fletcher has been an instrumental part of United's defence of their Premier League crown, winning over a lot of admirers in the process - including the Old Trafford faithful.

The midfielder carried on his tireless attitude and picked up the man of the match award during the midweek Carling Cup semi-final victory against local rivals Manchester City.

Ferguson has again praised the 25-year-old's performances ahead of Sunday's game, as well as comparing the Scotland international to United legend and fellow countryman Brian McClair.

"He (McClair) was exactly the same. When the ball moved, he moved.

"Darren is in the same mould because he must run more than anyone. His energy and awareness of space are excellent."

Ferguson added: "We have been saying how good he is for a while. Maybe it has taken longer for the fans to appreciate the qualities the boy has."
